Brigadier-General George Bell Medal Nominees

The Brigadier-General George Bell Medal Selection Committee is pleased to announce the official nominees for this year’s medal. The Canadian Forces College awards the Brigadier-General George Bell Medal in recognition of commitment and excellence in military writing as displayed by a student on the Joint Command and Staff Programme.

The nominees for JCSP 48 are:

  • Commander Graham Hill, “A Force to be Reckoned with: How a Focus on A Fitter Sailor Will Benefit the Royal Canadian Navy.” [Link]
  • Major Aaron Zakarison, “Challenges to Advising Above the Tactical Level.” [Link]
  • Lieutenant-Colonel Daniel Arsenault, “Waiting for Black Swans: Why Critical Infrastructure in the Arctic Needs a New Security Approach.” [Link]

For JCSP 48, the Brigadier-General George Bell Medal Selection Committee consisted of Mr Jeff Josselyn-Creighton, LCol Rhea Maclean, and Dr Pierre Pahlavi. The committee members wish to extend their congratulations to all the nominated course members. The recipient of the Brigadier-General George Bell Medal is Maj Aaron Zakarison, as announced by Barbara Thurston during the Graduation Ceremony on 22 June.

George Gray Bell

The late Brigadier-General George Gray Bell, OC, MBE, CD, a distinguished soldier and highly-regarded scholar, graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada and from the RCAF Staff College in 1947. He held BA and MA degrees from the University of Maryland and a PhD in International Relations from McGill University. During World War II, he served in the Netherlands and in Germany. Brigadier-General Bell retired from the Canadian Forces in 1973, after 33 years of service. He died at age 80 on 15 October 2000.
