Brigadier-General George Bell Medal Nominees

The Brigadier-General George Bell Medal Selection Committee is pleased to announce the official nominees for this year’s medal. The Canadian Forces College awards the Brigadier-General George Bell Medal in recognition of commitment and excellence in military writing as displayed by a student on the Joint Command and Staff Programme.

The nominees for JCSP 46 are:

  • Maj Shaun D’Souza, “The Impact of Sino-Russian Collaboration on Arctic Governance.” [Link]
  • Maj Travis Kelley, “Correlation of Military Trade with Selection of Generals and Flag Officers.” [Link]
  • Maj Corinne Koekhuyt, “Operational Effectiveness in Peacekeeping: Gender Myths and Realities.” [Link]

For JCSP 46, the Brigadier-General George Bell Medal Selection Committee consisted of Mr Jeff Josselyn-Creighton, LCol Shawn Thompson, Dr Barbara J. Falk, and (as an alternate) Dr Christopher Spearin. The committee members wish to extend their congratulations to all the nominated course members. The Brigadier-General George Bell Medal was presented to Maj Travis Kelley during the virtual Graduation Ceremony on 9 June 2020.

George Gray Bell

The late Brigadier-General George Gray Bell, OC, MBE, CD, a distinguished soldier and highly-regarded scholar, graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada and from the RCAF Staff College in 1947. He held BA and MA degrees from the University of Maryland and a PhD in International Relations from McGill University. During World War II, he served in the Netherlands and in Germany. Brigadier-General Bell retired from the Canadian Forces in 1973, after 33 years of service. He died at age 80 on 15 October 2000.
