Brigadier-General George Bell Medal Nominees

The Brigadier-General George Bell Medal Selection Committee is pleased to announce the official nominees for this year’s medal. The Canadian Forces College awards the Brigadier-General George Bell Medal in recognition of commitment and excellence in military writing as displayed by a student on the Joint Command and Staff Programme.

The nominees for JCSP 42 are:

  • LCol Brennan Cornell:
    “The Final Frontier: The Emergence of the Commercial Space Industry and the Loss of Space Hegemony.” [Link]
  • Maj Matthieu Debas:
    “Réconcilier technique et efficacité — Vers la Maîtrise des arts martiaux traditionnels à l’art de la guerre moderne.” [Link]
  • Maj Todd Murphy:
    “Violence for Sale: The Emergence of the Security Professional as a Competitor to the State Monopoly on the Military Application of Violence.” [Link]
  • Maj Marc O’Ray:
    “A Critical Examination of the Islamic State’s Organizational Legitimacy: A Historical and Institutional Perspective.” [Link]

For JCSP 42, the Brigadier-General George Bell Medal Selection Committee consisted of LCol Claire K. Bramma, Mr Jeff Josselyn-Creighton, and Dr Barbara J. Falk. The committee members wish to extend their congratulations to all the nominated course members. The Brigadier-General George Bell Medal was presented to Maj Debas by Ms Bell during the Graduation Ceremony on 21 June 2016.

George Gray Bell

The late Brigadier-General George Gray Bell, OC, MBE, CD, a distinguished soldier and highly-regarded scholar, graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada and from the RCAF Staff College in 1947. He held BA and MA degrees from the University of Maryland and a PhD in International Relations from McGill University. During World War II, he served in the Netherlands and in Germany. Brigadier-General Bell retired from the Canadian Forces in 1973, after 33 years of service. He died at age 80 on 15 October 2000.
