Brigadier-General George Bell Medal Nominees

The Brigadier-General George Bell Medal Selection Committee is pleased to announce the official nominees for this year’s medal. The Canadian Forces College awards the Brigadier-General George Bell Medal in recognition of commitment and excellence in military writing as displayed by a student on the Joint Command and Staff Programme.

The nominees for JCSP 50 are:

  • Major William Sylvester: “When Will the Torch Be Passed?” [Link]
  • Major Geneviève Therrien: "Au-delà du devoir : Enjeux de santé mentale chez les policiers militaires des Forces armées canadiennes" [Link]
  • Major C.M.F. Ward: “Shifting the Mindset Towards Phase Zero: Shaping in the Information Environment” [Link]

For JCSP 50, the Brigadier-General George Bell Medal Selection Committee consisted of Ms Brett Phillipson, LCol Ugo Leblond-Fortin, and Dr Christopher Spearin. The committee members wish to extend their congratulations to all the nominated course members. The recipient of the medal, Major Therrien, was announced during the Graduation Ceremony.

George Gray Bell

The late Brigadier-General George Gray Bell, OC, MBE, CD, a distinguished soldier and highly-regarded scholar, graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada and from the RCAF Staff College in 1947. He held BA and MA degrees from the University of Maryland and a PhD in International Relations from McGill University. During World War II, he served in the Netherlands and in Germany. Brigadier-General Bell retired from the Canadian Forces in 1973, after 33 years of service. He died at age 80 on 15 October 2000.
