360-Degree Feedback
360-Degree Feedback Self-Development Process
Information for Raters
The purpose of this information is to help you understand the 360-Degree Feedback Self-Development Process, in which your colleague has asked you to participate, and to explain how you can contribute to your colleague’s development.
The 360-Degree Feedback Self-Development Process is designed to help participants gather feedback from the people within their circle of influence, on their strengths and developmental needs. The circle of influence includes superiors, peers, and subordinates. The process also gives the participants an opportunity to rate themselves, and then to compare their self-ratings with information received from their raters.
Some Basic Principles of the 360-Degree Feedback Self-Development Process
Your ratings are anonymous; you will not be identified as an individual rater. Anonymity contributes to raters’ provision of honest, objective feedback, and avoids the risk of damaged relationships. You will not be asked to provide any self-identifying information. Questionnaires are completed on-line; your ratings will be password-protected and forwarded directly to the expert system for data collection.
Your ratings will be reported as aggregate data. To maintain your anonymity, your ratings will be combined with ratings from at least two other people in your rater group (e.g., peers, subordinates). It is the combined ratings that will be provided to your colleague in the feedback report.
The results of this feedback will be used for development purposes only. Only the person you have been asked to rate, and the external debriefer who will be coaching the participant, will see the feedback ratings and rater comments. No information will be forwarded to anyone within the Canadian Forces College.
Giving honest feedback — both positive and negative — is the best way to help your colleague.
Your Role as a Rater
You have been invited to be a rater because you are familiar with your colleague’s work, and because you are respected as someone who will provide honest, constructive feedback. To provide meaningful feedback, you need to be sufficiently familiar with the individual’s work and interpersonal style. In general, raters should have at least three to six months of working relationship with the individual they are rating.
If you have agreed to provide feedback to your colleague, he/she will provide your name, e-mail address and telephone number to the Royal Military College of Canada who administers the process on behalf of the Canadian Forces College. RMCC will then send you an e-mail explaining how to access and complete the on-line survey. On average, the survey takes no more than one hour to complete and most complete it in much less time.
To complete the survey, you will be asked to provide numerical ratings in response to a number of behavioural statements. You will also have the opportunity to provide comments on four key areas. Your comments will never be directly linked to you as an individual, but they will be reprinted verbatim in your colleague’s report, exactly as you type them. If you are concerned about your comments’ being attributable to you, take care to phrase them in a way that will not reveal your identity.
